Elizabeth Martha Warner was born in Shoreditch on Sunday 24 October 1819 and baptised at the church of St Leonards, Shoreditch on Monday 15 November 1819 [1] the daughter of James Warner, a cabinet varnisher and Mary. The family were living in Long Alley, Shoreditch, which runs from Moorfields and the site of the Bedlam Hospital, in a northerly direction and up past Primrose Street. This area was extensively developed in the late nineteenth century with the construction of Liverpool Street Station in 1874. Today the site of Long Alley would run from the North-East corner of Finsbury Circus, in a northerly direction between Broadgate Circus and Liverpool Street station towards Primrose Street.

Elizabeth Martha was the youngest of five children, brothers being James (b. 1808), John (b. 1811) and Thomas (b. 1813) and elder sister Ann Mary (b. 1818) (see family tree, below).

Elizabeth Martha Warner (1819 - 1894)

Elizabeth Martha Warner's Immediate Family

It is not known where, or if Elizabeth Martha attended school.

On Tuesday 16 July 1839, Elizabeth Martha Warner of John Street, Clerkenwell married Charles Callcutt a watch jeweller of Brittania Street, Clerkenwell at St Pancras Church in London  [2]. The groom and the first witness, John Thomas Buffery were able to sign their names in the register, but the bride and the second witness, Sarah Buffery were unable to sign their names, putting their marks instead. It is not known what the relationship was between the bride and groom and the witnesses, possibly friends or colleagues from work.

Elizabeth and Charles only son Charles was born on Tuesday 10 November 1840 when they were living at 113 Goswell Road, Clerkenwell [3], very close to Charles brother, William and his wife Nancy. Elizabeth and Charles had not been married long when tragically Charles died on Wednesday 9 March 1842 from consumption (pulmonary tuberculosis) [4]. One week later, Charles was buried at the Church of St James, Clerkenwell [5].

Elizabeth Martha, a widow aged 25, married for the second time at the church of St Andrew, Holborn on Sunday 29 September 1844, the groom being Thomas Charles Knight aged 24 [6]. Both the groom and the bride were living in Hat and Tan Yard, a stones throw from where the groom Thomas lived previously in Round Court: Elizabeth at number eight and Thomas at number six. Both witnesses to the marriage were relatives of the bride, Thomas and Sarah Warner.

The Knight family were living at number 8 New Buildings, Amwell Street, Clerkenwell, just 150m north of the Mount Pleasant sorting office in Farringdon Road at the time of the 1851 census [7]. The census shows Elizabeth, her husband Thomas employed as a light porter, together with their children Charles, aged eleven (Elizabeth's son by a previous marriage), Mary Ann aged two and Louisa aged eleven months. Seven years later the family fortunes took a turn for the worse as they moved to Myrtle Street, Hoxton, adjacent to St John's Church and Thomas was employed as a labourer[8].

By the time of the 1861 census [9] the Knight family had moved to number 27 Pear Tree Court, Clerkenwell. The eight members of the family were: Thomas Knight aged 39, employed as a gate keeper; his wife Elizabeth Knight aged 41 employed as a bank teller; Charles Calcutt aged 19 a labourer; Mary Ann aged 11, Louisa aged 10 and William aged 5 all listed as scholars; Eliza aged 4 and Abraham aged 7 months. Note that Charles Calcutt's relation to the head of the family is recorded as 'son-in-law', (step-son) as he is Elizabeth's son from her first marriage.

Ten years later the Knight family were still living at 25 Pear Tree Court. The 1871 census [10] and 1871 census [11] shows Thomas and his wife Elizabeth living with their children William, Elizabeth, Abraham and Catherine. By this time their fortunes have taken a turn for the better, as Thomas is employed as a metal castor.

By 1881 the Knight family had moved to Holborn, and the 1881 census [12] for Holborn shows six members of the Knight family living at 7 Leather Lane, which connects Theobolds Road to High Holborn, not far from Hatton Garden. At this time Thomas Knight was employed as a labourer, as was his elder son William. His younger son Abraham, aged 20, was employed as a wood turner.

At the time of her husband Thomas's death in October 1887, Elizabeth was living at 5 Union Buildings, Holborn[13]. Four years later at the time of the 1891 census [14] the family were living at 179 Farringon Road, Clerkenwell. Elizabeth was employed as a brioch-maker (not sure about brioch, could be broach) and lived with her son William, a butcher, and her daughter Catherine, a bookfolder, and her nephew Francis Knight, aged two.

Elizabeth died on Sunday 25 February 1894, aged seventy two at 20 Merlins Place, Clerkenwell from the effects of cerebral hemorrhage [15].
